Where to say I do at City Hall

Portland makes it incredibly easy to tie the knot at city hall. You have two great options:

  • Use the Clerk’s Office for a quick elopement. After applying for your marriage license, you can request a city staff member (usually a notary public or clerk) to perform a short ceremony in their office. It’s simple, low-fuss, and perfect for couples who want to keep it sweet and minimal.
  • Rent the ornate State of Maine Room with big windows and historic details if you’re planning on having guests or want a private space for your ceremony!

Are there good spots to take photos around City Hall?

Absolutely. City hall itself is beautiful—with marble staircases, vintage woodwork, and soft natural light that looks stunning in photos. As a Portland, Maine wedding photographer, I love how elegant and timeless these portraits feel.

And once you’re done at city hall? You’re a short walk or drive from so many scenic spots: the cobblestone streets of the Old Port, sweeping ocean views at the Eastern Prom, or even quiet moments along the docks or hidden alleys. It’s the best of both worlds—classic architecture and coastal charm.

The best ways to celebrate

Just because you eloped doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate in style. Some ideas couples I’ve worked with have loved:

  • Grab drinks or dinner in the Old Port. There’s no shortage of amazing restaurants and cozy cocktail bars within walking distance. Whether you want oysters by the water or a laid-back pizza and beer night, there’s something for every vibe.
  • Picnic by the water. Bring your favorite snacks, champagne, and a blanket to the Eastern Prom or Willard Beach for a low-key romantic moment.
  • Private dinner with close friends. Consider renting a space or hiring a private chef if you want something more intimate but still elevated.

Why choose Portland for your elopement?

Couples choose to elope in Portland for so many reasons:

  • The city is easy to get around, even if you’re coming in from out of town.
  • You can keep things small and still have access to amazing views, food, and energy.
  • It’s relaxed and customizable. Whether you’re planning a low-key ceremony or a full-day adventure, you can make it exactly what you want.

And of course, when you work with a local Portland Maine wedding photographer, you’ll have someone who knows the best photo spots, how to navigate city hall logistics, and how to make even the smallest celebration feel epic.
