Sugar Hill Lupines Engagement Session

Sugar Hill Lupine Engagement Session

Every year in early June, the tiny mountain town of Sugar Hill, New Hampshire, transforms into something straight out of a fairytale. Rolling hills, mountain views, and a sea of lupine make this one of the most magical places in New England. The Sugar Hill lupines are one of my favorite places to take engagement photos.

Kellyn and Ryan’s engagement session in the lupine last year was pure magic. The golden light, the sweeping fields, and her perfectly flowy dress made it all feel like a scene from a movie. Photographing their connection among the wildflowers was such a dream.

Whether you’re planning a photo session or just want to see the Sugar Hill lupine in bloom, here’s everything you need to know about catching them at their peak.

When is the best time to see the Sugar Hill lupine?

The lupine in Sugar Hill usually bloom in early to mid-June, with peak bloom often falling around the second week of the month. It can vary a little year to year depending on weather and temps, but that’s generally your best bet.

Sunrise and sunset are the most magical times to visit—not just for dreamy light, but also to beat the crowds that come during the day. If you want that soft glow and a more peaceful experience, plan for golden hour. Bonus: the views of the White Mountains in the distance are extra stunning with that warm light.

Where to find a lupine field near me

If you’ve been Googling “lupine field near me,” chances are Sugar Hill popped up—and for good reason. It’s one of the most iconic spots to see lupines in all of New England. The town even hosts a Lupine Festival every June to celebrate the bloom (though I personally love the quieter mornings before the festivities begin).

Popular spots include fields near Polly’s Pancake Parlor and the Sugar Hill Sampler, but you’ll also find little pockets of lupine scattered all around the area. Just a quick note: a lot of the fields are on private land, so be mindful to stay on the roadside or ask permission if you’re venturing off-trail. Respecting the land helps keep this place beautiful for everyone.

Are lupines invasive in New Hampshire?

Yep—while lupine are undeniably beautiful, most of the ones you see in Sugar Hill are Russell hybrids, which aren’t native to New Hampshire. They’re actually considered invasive and can outcompete some local wildflowers.

That said, there’s a way to appreciate them responsibly! Enjoy the views, take all the photos your heart desires, but avoid picking them or trampling the fields. By staying on paths and photographing from a respectful distance, we can keep this spot magical for years to come.

A dreamy Sugar Hill engagement session

Kellyn and Ryan’s session is still one of my all-time favorites. Kellyn wore a soft, flowy dress that caught the breeze perfectly and looked so romantic against the backdrop of blooming lupine and mountains in the distance. Their energy was so playful and grounded—laughing, twirling, just being their sweet selves. We moved through the fields as the sun dipped behind the hills, and every frame felt like a postcard.

If you’re dreaming of your own engagement session (or even an elopement!) during lupine season, it’s never too early to start planning. I only book a handful of sessions during peak bloom to keep things relaxed and intentional, so reach out soon if this feels like your kind of magic.
